A vertical, surreal composition featuring a stacked arrangement of symbolic animals…A Totem. At the base, a moose anchors the totem with sovereignty, quiet confidence, and grounded strength. Above it, a dragon coils in mythic energy—symbolizing transformation, protection, and mastery over inner power. Next, the wolverine embodies fierce determination and resilience, an unyielding spirit that never backs down. Rising above, an eagle spreads its wings between two worlds, representing vision, freedom, and higher perspective. The lion, regal and bold, carries courage, heart, and protective leadership, while the turtle rests just below the crown, offering patience, grounding, and ancient wisdom. At the very top, the white elk stands tall as a guardian of clarity, spiritual stamina, and ancestral connection.

This commissioned piece was created to reflect the collector’s personal spirit totem, each animal chosen for its unique symbolic meaning and place in their journey.

Statement From Michael

“Totem” was created as a commissioned piece to represent the collector’s personal spirit totem—a symbolic reflection of their inner journey. Each animal in the stack holds meaning: strength, grounding, intuition, clarity, protection and spirit. The painting unfolded intuitively, one form leading to the next, like they were waiting to emerge. It became a kind of dream totem—a vertical guide through transformation, memory, and the deeper wild parts of the self. Creating it felt less like planning and more like channeling.

Totem was a commissioned piece for my friend Greg, who wanted a visual representation of his spiritual totem. Each animal in the stack reflects a different facet of his inner self—strength, grounding, vision, wisdom, resilience, protection and spirit. We first connected over coffee at his well-known company, Coffee Bar, which originally sprouted in Truckee, California. Greg is an entrepreneur, a father, and a true leader, and I wanted this painting to mirror his solid, grounded energy. The composition unfolded naturally, each form leading to the next, and to this day, it remains one of my favorites.
